How to Format Phone Numbers in Google Sheets
This article will teach you how to format cells so that phone numbers typed into cells are automatically formatted as phone numbers (555-555-5555, for example).
To format a cell as a phone number, follow these steps.
- Select any cell(s) you want to be formatted as phone numbers. These may either be blank or already containing the phone number you wish to format.
- From the toolbar, select “Format”, then hover over the “Number” option. From the “Number” drop down menu, select “Custom Number Format” at the bottom.
- This will display a custom number format box where you can create your desired format. For example, typing 000-000-0000 into the format box will result in your phone numbers being displayed as 555-555-5555. A cell previously containing 5551234567 will now be displayed 555-123-4567. You may add parenthesis or numbers for a country code as necessary.
- Once you have selected “Apply”, your selected cells will be formatted as phone numbers.
- You will now be able to reuse this format in your sheet wherever you need by once again selecting “Format” from the toolbar and hovering over “Number”. Your custom phone number format will be an option near the bottom of the “Number” drop down.
